Gammarus

  • Keystone species in running water ecosystems (structurally, functionally)
  • Reproduction throughout the year, 50 offspring/female and month, life-span 1-2 years
  • Many species, also several „neozoa“ (invasive species) in Europe, widely spread in the Northern hemisphere; also marine species, i.e. GamTox test with broad application
  • Accepted species in ecotoxicology next to Daphnia magna/pulex (for lakes)
  • Amphipods are standard test species for sediment assays (e.g. USA)
  • Important shredder in POM-material cycling
  • In situ tests possible, link to bioassessment data from biological water quality monitoring
