Ecotoxicology is the science of adverse effects of toxicants on organisms, populations and ecosystems. The number and amount of chemicals and their degradation products in the environment is increasing, adverse effects remain unknown for many chemical stressors and their interactions in the environment. Sometimes, toxic effects neither obey threshold theory nor follow monotonous response curves. Severe ecological degradation caused by multiple stressors, whereof pollution is one of the most important, pushed environmental legislation towards ambitious goals (e.g. EU-Waterframework Directive, Marine Strategy, Millenium Development Goals), however efficient and effective methods and tools for pollution assessment and evaluation, monitoring and management, prevention and reduction still have to be developed, standardized and implemented. Valorization of natural resources, increasing communication, sensibility and participation of people in environmental protection are essentials for a sustainable preservation of our limited natural resources.
LimCo International contributes to these urgent tasks by offering scientific expertise (ecotoxicological research) and advice (participation in gremia), developing rapid in situ biotests (pollution assessment and evaluation) and biomonitor systems (pollution prevention, monitoring and management). Moroever, LimCo International is engaged in environmental education (especially for children) and sensibilisation of people for the beauty of nature at different scales (art photography).”
